Dacor Epicure EF36BNNFSS Refrigerator Review

The Dacor EF36BNNFSS bottom freezer is one classy looking appliance. Finished with stainless steel, this French door style refrigerator has three doors – two for the top mounted fridge and a third drawer door for the freezer on the bottom.
With a width of 36″ and a depth of 24″ this 19.8 cubic foot unit (5.5 cubic feet of which is dedicated to the freezer) is not the largest around.
However, the narrow depth which constrains the capacity of this small fridge freezer also means that the unit integrates well with a kitchens cabinetry. In many homes this Dacor refrigerator will fit flush with the kitchen countertops.

Priced at close to three thousand dollars there is no doubt that this is an expensive fridge. So does it have the features to justify the price?  The appliance is very energy efficient, using less electricity than a 60W light bulb.
It also incorporates an advanced control panel for monitoring internal temperatures in its multi-zone temperature system.
The Dacor Epicure EF36BNNFSS 19.8 cu. ft. Counter-Depth Bottom-Freezer French Door Refrigerato is available only in a very attractive and refined Stainless steel. So while the choice of finishes is limited, it does look very attractive.
Inside will be found two humidity controlled vegetable crispers, and one temperature controlled deli drawer.
The tempered glass shelving within the refrigerator compartment are spill proof, and the French doors come with adjustable bins capable of storing gallon size containers of milk.
The Dacor’s freezer drawers include handy wire freezer baskets for easy organization and access of frozen food, and the unit also includes the standard automatic ice-maker expected in a fridge freezer of this caliber.
One item of note is that the price for this appliance does not include any door handles.
If you choose to add handles to the doors you will be out another three to five hundred dollars.
This may seem a lot – and it is – but the handles come in various exotic finishes including chrome, copper and stone trim.
Despite the peculiarity of paying extra for the handles, the Dacor Epicure EF36BNNFSS is a feature packed and extremely attractive fridge-freezer. While not cheap, this refrigerator will make a beautiful addition to any high end homes kitchen.

The Under Counter Fridge – A Great Refrigerator Option

Many households looking for a luxurious yet convenient addition to their kitchen will consider the purchase of a second fridge. When it comes to choosing a second fridge, an under counter fridge is a very popular choice.

A simple compact fridge or bar fridge can make for a cheap second fridge. However, if your needs are for a design that smoothly fits into your existing kitchen dcor then undercounter refrigeration has a lot of benefits. Below I will discuss the features of these appliances, and briefly discuss a couple of the available models.

The usual form factor of one of these small refrigerators is a set of drawers – frequently caster drawers. These under cabinet refrigerators are installed in a space similar to that which built-in dishwashers occupy. With a relatively small foot print, and easy access for children, they can be a very handy addition to the kitchen. If you seek additional freezer space these units are available as under counter freezers also.
The discreet installation beneath the kitchen counter allows the small integrated fridges to seamlessly blend into your room, and project an air of sophisticated elegance. Available with a variety of finishes, you can choose the traditional white or black front. You can also opt for stainless steel, or even custom fitted wooden panels. This is an especially nice option if you have opted for a full sized integrated fridge freezer as your primary appliance; the two integrated refrigerators will complement each other very nicely.
Similarly to the full sized integrated fridges, these under the counter refrigerator units are designed specifically to allow them to be operated flush to the walls under cabinetry by having the ventilation on the front of the unit. With cheap compact fridges while you need to ensure several inches of ventilation space on each side; which reduces those units suitability for use as compact undercounter refrigerators.
Unfortunately, while very convenient and attractive, you will have to pay a significant sum for a quality under-counter drawer refrigerator. Most models are in the US$1,500 to US$3,000 dollar price range. It is the homeowners decision a to whether nor not having a fridge integrated under counter tops is worth the expense.
As mentioned earlier they are of a similar capacity to many mini-bar fridges or compact refrigerators, and those alternatives can make for a cheap undercounter fridge at a very small fraction of the price. Not however that care must be taken if you choose this route that under the counter refrigerators are adequately ventilated.
The Electrolux ICON : E24RD50QS Professional Series Under-Counter Refrigerator Drawers is a good example of a premium under counter refrigerator. This unit has generous capacity and a stainless steel finish. This particular under counter refrigerator has two sliding drawers, and is truly a sophisticated kitchen appliance that will fit well into the most modern designer kitchen.
Thankfully there is a compromise available as there are under counter fridge freezer units available that have a more traditional compact design combined with a ventilation system that allows them to be used flush against walls. These units are generally priced more than a regular compact fridge, but for significantly less than the upscale drawer type undercounter fridges.
Summit CT66B 5.1 cu. ft. Compact Refrigerator with Adjustable Glass Shelves, Door Storage, Manual Defrost Freezer, Dual Evaporator and Interior Light: Black
The Summit Appliances CT66B Deluxe Under-Counter Refrigerator-Freezer veers away from the drawer design, and is a model that looks more like a compact fridge, but has the ventilation features that allow for safe usage under a counter. This undercounter refrigerator can be a great choice if you do not want to pay the premium for the drawer type units.
Even high end firms like Sub Zero and Viking manufacture quality undercounter refrigerators.
Also something to keep in mind though this may be less of a concern if you can afford one of these units is energy usage. Though relatively cheap to run due to their small size, under counter refrigerators are considerably less efficient than any large American style fridge when it comes to energy usage per unit volume. That said, at less than US$50 per year to run assuming your electricity prices aren’t prohibitive the cost of operating under counter fridges should not be too serious a problem.

Integrated Fridges

For many homeowners, the ideal refrigerator in recent years has been a side-by-side, perhaps a stylish stainless steel fridge freezer. However, of late the new trend in kitchen renovations has been the move towards the ‘integrated kitchen’. The basic concept behind this is rather than having appliances matching each other; integrated appliances are instead used to match with the kitchen cabinetry. The popularity of this trend has led to the rise of integrated fridges.
A standard American refrigerator – no matter in white, black or stainless- is very hard to miss. When you walk into a kitchen the fridge stands out like a sore thumb. Integrated refrigerators, on the other hand, are custom designed to disappear in the kitchen.
A fully integrated fridge is usually custom designed for a particular kitchen, unlike traditional fridge freezers. The usual technique is to form a panel to be affixed to the appliance door. This panel will be made of the same type and tint of wood used by the kitchen cabinets. If properly designed, at first glance the door of the integrated refrigerator will look just like another cabinet.
To fully achieve this look requires more than just a door. The fridge must be designed to fit into the wall so it does not stick out further than the cabinetry. This may require modification to the wall to create a niche for the appliance to be placed. Also, if the kitchens cabinetry is somewhat ornate, it may be necessary to add trim to the door panel to fully duplicate the look of the rest of the kitchen.
As with traditional American fridges, an integrated refrigerator can be had in a wide range of styles. They can be a basic fridge or freezer, a fridge over freezer combo unit, or the classic favorite – a side by side unit. Also popular, often as second fridges, is the use of an integrated under counter fridge to provide supplemental refrigerated storage for well equipped kitchens.
Since these custom built fridges are designed to be able to split tightly between cabinets, they do not require the traditional buffer space of air around them that other fridges do. This feature – plus their high stealth factor – makes integrated fridge freezers ideal for rooms other than the kitchen. The idea of an integrated bar fridge that blends subtly into the background appeals to many.
All good things come at a price, and the integrated fridge freezer is not exempt. You will pay a significant premium in having one of these units customized for your kitchen. There may also be additional cost in preparing an area in your kitchen for the installation. However, if you are renovating already, then some of that money is going to be a wash.
Another possible negative factor to consider is that integrated fridges are usually significantly smaller than traditional models. This is due to the requirement for the refrigerator to blend with the cabinets, and not stick out into the kitchen.
If you have the funds, and can live without the extra fridge space, then creating an integrated kitchen may be for you. If so, then you will definitely find yourself needing to purchase one of these integrated fridges.
