Car Fridges – Vehicle Refrigerator Options

Installing a car fridge in your vehicle allows you to have refrigeration on the go in your vehicle. It can prove to be a very gratifying modification.
If you have a large truck or SUV, and like to go on long trips, a car fridge will prove itself extremely valuable as a camping fridge on family vacations or off-road trips.
However, you don’t have to hit the open road in order to enjoy the benefits of a portable car refrigerator. It can serve a simple a task as that of providing a supply of cold drinks for the family while you run errands about town, or at the kids soccer game.
Portable Car Fridges come in several different styles. They can be powered solely by 12V DC, 24V DC, or even 110V AC; and are even available with combinations of these power options. Some fridges, known as 3-way fridges, even have an LPG propane option. However, you should definitely not attempt to power your fridge using propane when driving.
If you are going to be giving your fridge regular use in anything but the most benign of conditions, you will want to invest in a quality car fridge. Some good quality portable car fridge manufacturers are National Luna, ARB, Engel(a manufacturer with a long history) and Waeco.
Car Fridges come in various sizes, from very small – roughly a dozen quarts – to very large – some over 80 quarts of storage. Some car refrigerators even provide two compartments, one which serves as a fridge, and a second one which serves as a freezer. This expands your options by allowing you to take frozen meat, and other similar perishables, with you on the road.
If you will just be using your fridge on quick errands around town, then a very small cheap 12V mini fridge may serve your purposes better than the more expensive models intended for more serious use.
When planning a car fridge purchase there are some important things to consider.
How much storage do you need?
This fridge will be occupying space in your vehicle, so if you buy one that is too large you may regret it.
How will you power it?
Make sure the fridge is compatible with your power supply. For example, if you are going to run it off your 12 Volt car battery, make sure it is a car fridge that will run on 12V DC (12 Volt Direct Current).
Do you have sufficient power?
This is an important item. If you are going to run the 12v refrigerator full time, you may want to consider installing a second battery in your vehicle especially for the use of the car fridge. You do not want to run your starting battery down keeping your beer cold.
Enjoy your new car refrigerator!

Bar Fridges

Whether you enjoy entertaining guests or not, bar fridges can be a great enhancement to your home. They serve many purposes, and are wonderful additions to any room where you like to have cold beverages on hand.
Many people, when they think of bar fridges, erroneously think they require a mini bar. This is not true, a bar fridge is for everyone.
While it is true there are truly spectacular specialist ‘display bar fridges’ designed for the home with the full built-in bar; you do not need such a bar to get the benefits a bar refrigerator provides.
Many homeowners utilize a mini fridge and a shelf as a substitute for the bar they do not have. The mini bar fridge holds your mixes – orange juice, coke, sprite and the like. On the shelf you line up your favorite liquors.
If you purchase a nice model, your bar fridge may actually be a bar fridge freeze. Now your do it yourself bar has ice cubes too. Just train your significant other to prepare your drinks and life will be looking pretty darn good!
A bar fridge does not have to be actually labeled as such by a manufacturer. There are many compact fridge freezers available that will serve you just as well. Really any mini fridge can be repurposed to serve the role of the – usually more expensive – special purpose bar fridges.
Another great feature small bar refrigerators provide is portability. If your bar fridge is in the game room but you decide to host a pool party over a holiday weekend, you can still make use of it. Simply unplug the unit and it is now a portable fridge. Take it outside, plug it in – first make sure it is not going to rain – and you an outdoor bar fridge for the duration of your event!
Like all refrigerators, bar fridges have an ongoing cost in electrical use. Make sure you only purchase a model with the Energy Star label. Even if it costs a little more you will save on your utilities.
Speaking of electricity, most bar fridges are powered from regular mains power. But there is a truly flexible option some people might want to consider; namely purchasing a 3-way fridge to serve as their bar fridge. While serving its normal role it remains plugged into a wall outlet. However, when you are ready to make your fridge portable, you have the ability to power it from both 12v DC and Propane. Now you truly have a useful appliance!
Many great manufacturers produce mini fridges suitable for bar use. Danby, LG, Kenmore, Maytag and Samsung are just a small sampling of the brands available. A GE bar fridge can be a great purchase also. If the thought of a 3-way bar fridge appeals to you then consider the Waeco and Norcold lines. If none of these appeal there is also the option of buying a Kegerator.
The inclusion of any of these great bar fridges into your home will make the cold beverage of your choice much more accessible. Of course, to truly make the most of your new bridge you need some great beers – if you have ever considered home brewing then click here to learn the tips of the trade!

Picking your Portable Fridge

When you are in the market for a Portable Fridge, it is well worth your time looking at the Engel product line.
Engel fridge-freezers have been manufactured for well over 40 years, and are popular throughout the world. Engel portable fridges are widely used in the rugged Australian outback, where their solid Japanese engineering serves them well in rough dusty terrain.
Their smallest portable fridge is the 16 quart MT17. This model can fit two dozen cans of the beverage of your choice. It draws 2.5 amps of 12V DC, or 0.9 amps if run on 110V AC.
Middle of their size range is the 40 quart MR040, which can hold five dozen cans of soda or beer. It’s power draw is very similar to that of the MT17, so if you have the room, this model could be a good choice.
The largest Engel portable fridge (although using the word ‘portable’ to describe it is a stretch) is the 84 quart MT80. This Engel car fridge – which can also be used as a freezer – has room for almost ten dozen soda cans. This is sufficient space for food for quite some time. This model can be run on either 12V DC or 24V DC (this option might be good for setting the fridge up to run on Solar Power), or also 110V AC. It draws a rather substantial 4.2 amps.
If you are considering the purchase of an Engel portable fridges, you are unlikely to regret it. They have been used for decades as camping fridges and caravan fridges around the world. They are not cheap, but should last you a long long time and provide many years of good quality service.
If the Engel line of products does not appeal, you do have some other quality manufacturers you can consider.
The recently combined Dometic/Waeco company is another major portable fridge brand. Pioneers in the portable fridge industry, their portable fridges are popular in marine settings among the sailboat cruising set.
Another well known brand that caters to the camping fridge and caravan fridge market is National Luna. The original pedigree of their portable refrigeration products was for transporting vaccines in third world African conditions. Their advertising likes to utilize this to emphasize the toughness of their products.
Whether you choose Engel, Waeco, or National Luna as your portable fridge provider, you should be assured of a decent quality product. Enjoy your purchase, and enjoy the cold drinks!

Camping Freezers Icemaker

Ice Maker

An ice maker is a very handy product to have, whether built into a refrigerator or used as a standalone appliance on a counter top.
There are many different ice makers available, with differing capacities to make varying amounts of ice.
They can be used in many places – such as in a kitchen, in a mini bar, for entertaining on a patio, or various other outdoor setting.
Some icemachines are designed specifically for outdoor use, as an addition to a barbecue area or outdoor bar.
These products can cost well over a thousand dollars, but are designed with a covered back to keep out rain, sand and other elements that could cause damage over time. They come in various finishes, including stainless steel.
Some of the more expensive units have an ice generating capacity that is enough to serve an entire party; these are great for special occasions and celebrations.
For indoor use, there are many different options. You can select an under the counter ice machine or a portable ice maker that rests on top of the kitchen counter.  Either one of these products is a useful addition to the home.
An under the counter option is priced higher than a counter top model. Prices for counter top products can range from $150 to $450 depending on size and brand, while under the counter models can range in price from $500 up in to the thousands.
Even more expensive are large ice-makers designed for commercial use such as Hoshizaki and Manitowoc ice machines.
An under the counter ice cube maker may require a substantial amount of work in install. Depending on your kitchens design there might be a need to removing or remodel existing kitchen cabinetry to create an appropriate sized space. This is essential if you want your ice makers’ installation to have an attractive professional look, and not exhibit visible gaps.
You can find many different finishes in undercounter icemaker. Many people will choose one that best matches their existing appliances – like the refrigerator, stove and dishwasher. There are even some icecube makers available with two toned finishes, in a combination of black and stainless steel.
Many of these products have large storage bins under the countertop. This allows them to hold plenty of finished cubes while still allowing the appliance to make more.
Counter top models vary in size. They can produce small quantities for a family’s daily use, or larger amounts for many more people. Some counter top models take up little space, while producing plenty of cubes for the day.
A smaller 17 X 15 X 17 inch ice cube maker can make up to 35 pounds per day. Such ice makers for the home typically have a water reservoir, which will require periodic filling. Additional features may include automatic timers and digital programming, so the machine can stop working when it is not needed.
These smaller models do not require adding a water line, so they can be used in any room of the home where an outlet is available. They make a great addition to a pantry, covered patio, sunroom or dorm room.
In many cases, purchasing one of these products is a less costly solution that purchasing a new refrigerator. Some people may be happy with their current fridge freezer, and simply want this product so they do not have to rely on plastic or steel cube trays for the creation of ice.
A small portable ice maker is a great option for apartments, where running a water line to the fridge may be forbidden. Portable ice makers are also popular for use on camping trips, and can be found in large recreational vehicles or remote cabins.
With most of these small models weighing less than 50 pounds, they are fairly easy to move to a desired location.
As we have seen, there is an ice maker suitable for most scenarios. A wise purchase will ensure sufficient ice wherever you may need it.

RV Refrigerator

An RV refrigerator is a must have item for anyone who plans to spend any period of time in a recreational vehicle. While we expect to rough it a little when we choose to travel – or even live on the road full time – we do expect the basic luxuries. Reliable RV refrigeration is near the top of that list of luxuries.
A motorhome needs to have an RV fridge so that we are able enjoy the benefits of chilled food; even more useful is an RV freezer to allow for frozen food. With one of these appliances installed our dining options expand enormously – a great comfort for many – and we gain the ability to store leftovers from meals we do not finish.
This is truly a wonderful perk. When we know we can eat something for two or three days, it is worth out time to take the effort to cook something special two or three times a week rather than it being a daily chore.
Apart from expanding our eating choices, we also gain the capacity to have an ice cold drink of our choice available for consumption as we while away the evening hours. Relaxing is one of the chief benefits of the RV life, so appropriate beverages are very welcome.
When purchasing RV refrigerators there are many types of fridge you may consider. I would advise avoiding regular portable fridges designed for stick built house dwellers due to their requirement for mains power. Also to be avoided are dedicated 12v fridges – while some of these, such as the Engel, are magnificent units they are more appropriate for use as car fridges.
With an RV you have the potential to tote propane around as you travel. This gives you the ability to operate a 3 way motorhome refrigerator, and I strongly advise you avail yourself of this. When you install a 3 way RV fridge freezer in your motorhome you have an incredibly versatile cooling solution. Let me briefly explain.
A 3 way refrigerator can be powered by any of the following – mains electricity, propane LPG, or a 12V direct current source. Between these three options you will have refrigeration at a modern camp ground (mains power), boon-docking on Bureau of Land Management acreage (propane) or driving between the two (12V DC).
No other RV refrigeration solution offers the same level of flexibility. That is why a 3 way fridge freezer is the ideal solution for your RV refrigerator needs. When looking for particular units match the dimensions carefully against where you plan to place it in your motor home, and be sure to purchase a trusted brand such as Norcold or Dometic. If money is tight you can often find a bargain by shopping for used RV refrigerators.

Camping Heating Reviews

Dyna Glo Propane Heater

A Dyna Glo Propane Heater is a great piece of kit for anyone who regularly takes camping, caravan or RV trips in cold weather.
The ‘Dyna-Glo Tag-A-Long Portable Propane Heater’ – the official title on the box – will allow you to take an easily powered heat source with you wherever you go. If you are all familiar with the ‘Mr Buddy’ propane heater, this Dyna-Glo model is very similar. So what are the features of Dyna-Glo propane heaters that you should be aware of?
This Dyna glo heater is powered by your standard 16.4 ounce propane bottles. These are the regular Coleman type bottles you find at many stores, so finding fuel for your heater will not be difficult. Inside the end of the heater is a compartment for tucking the propane bottle neatly away. The compartment also contains a special swiveling valve that allows you to first hookup the bottle, and then lower it into place in the holder. Very handy!

Dyna Glo Safety Features
The Dyna-Glo Tag-A-Long has a few features to ensure maximum safety during use. First it features a tip-over sensor. This sensor will shut off the heater automatically if the heater falls over. Also included are low-oxygen sensors which are also designed to shutoff the heater if it senses Oxygen is being intended.
While this is a great idea, I would still recommend anyone using one of these inside to ensure they have a cracked window for ventilation – you can’t be too careful. Finally the manufacture boasts of the units’ heavy duty safety grills.
Dyna Glo Propane Heating and Runtime
This adjustable propane heater can put out between 4500 BTU and 8000 BTU of heat, depending on how you set it. One of the 16.4 Oz. Coleman canisters can power the unit for close to 5 hours, enough to provide heating – and residual heat – for a night.
Precautionary Note
Many people will buy a large 20lb propane tank and rig a hookup to power these type of heaters. This is done to allow for extended run time. It also reduces the cost of operation, as the small Coleman canisters are rather expensive.
If you choose to go this route, do so at your own risk, but please keep this caution in mind. Before shutting of the propane heater, shut off the propane tank. Let the heater keep burning until it uses all the remaining propane in the feeder house. This will prevent the high pressure propane in the hose causing any damage to any of your equipment.
Dyna Glo Two Models
The Dyna-Glo heater is available in two different models. The chief difference between the two being that the larger of the two dyna glo heaters is powered by two of the Coleman cylinders, and can produce a little more heat for twice as long as the smaller unit.
If your outdoor adventures require a mobile heat source in the form of a portable heater, then a Dyna Glo Propane heater may be right for you.

Engel Fridge Freezer

Without a doubt, an Engel fridge freezer is one of the greatest 12v car fridges available. Anyone who has ever done any research into 12v fridges know that Waeco fridges, Norcold fridges and Dometic refrigerators are all good units;  but many car fridge owners swear by their Engel Fridges. So what is it that makes them so popular?
Non Engel car fridges can be obtained very cheaply. Portable refrigerators utilizing thermoelectric refrigeration can be had for fewer than one hundred dollars. However these devices are very inefficient. They draw a wasteful 5 amps of power but do not cool well; generally being able to cool only a limited amount below external ambient temperatures. This type of refrigerator is very poorly suited for use in a car, where inside temperatures can get very high, and available power is limited by the vehicles battery size.
Better car fridges use compressor technology, which use a lot less electricity and are a lot better at cooling than absorption. Any car fridge that you purchase should be a compressor model. This technology is key to the excellent operation of the Engel freezer compartments.
While there are several manufacturers of 12v compressor car fridges, Engel fridge freezers stand out from the crowd.   Engel is powered by the renowned Sawafuji Swing Motor compressor technology which has several advantages over the competitors. Many car fridges are made with other types of compressors – such as the Danfoss style – which while better than absorption models, do have some limitations.
Engel compressors have less moving parts than their reciprocating counterparts. They are specifically designed to handle the vibrations and shock that car fridges are subject to in rugged applications such as 4×4 off-roading.

The Engel AC/DC Fridge Freezer – Engel MT45F-U1 is probably the most popular car fridge freezer in Engels’ lineup. It draws only 2.5 Amps and provides a generous capacity of 43 quarts for this lower power usage. Another plus is that its shape makes it a very efficent footprint for placing in the back of many trucks.
Another great feature is that the startup surge for an Engel refrigerator is a lot lower than for a reciprocating compressor. This can avoid the need to customize your vehicles electrical system for your fridge – a potentially costly endeavor.

When you purchase an Engel fridge you also have the choice of some great accessories. One of these is the Engel Transit Bag for MT45 – Engel TBAG45G to help protect your refrigerator from the daily abuses of dust and bumps inherent to many forms of off-road travel. Even more importantly the transit bags inner layer of insulation reflects a lot of external heat back where it came from, thus reducing the workload of the fridge. While at first glance this bag may appear to restrict access to the fridge, it is still easily accessed simply by unzipping the cover.

A great accessory when it comes to mounting your car fridge is an Engel Transit Slide Lock for MT35/45 – Engel TSL530/540. By mounting your fridge on one of these easy sand resistant slides, you can have easy access to your fridge without having to clamber into the interior of your truck every time you want to grab something; you back is sure to thank you for the purchase of one of these items.
While reciprocating compressors are energy efficient, the compressors Engel uses are even more so. Engel fridges are known to draw only about half the power of similar Waeco units. They are also able to cool much more effectively, being able to provide a very deep freeze.
With all these great features, Engels refrigerators should be high the list for anyone purchasing a 12v DC car fridge for their vehicle. It is rare to find an Engel fridge for sale, so you may pay a little more for their models than you would for some of their competition, but you will be able to rest assured that you have a vehicle designed for the toughest conditions.
Used from the Australian Outback, to African Safaris; an Engel fridge freezer is sure to be able to handle everything you throw at it.

12v Fridge

If you are in the market for a 12v fridge for your car or off-road vehicle, there are several points to consider before taking the plunge. I will briefly discuss here some of the more pertinent factors relevant to the purchase of a 12V refrigerator in the hope of making you a more informed buyer.
Compression Or Absorption Technology
The cooling system in nearly all refrigerators utilizes one of two basic technologies: Compression refrigeration or Absorption refrigeration. Each of these systems has its respective advantages and disadvantages for use in a 12 volt cooler.

Click to Buy 12 Volt Refrigerators from Amazon!

The major advantage of an absorption refrigerator is that these devices can potentially be powered using gas. If you are considering a 3 way fridge like those used in a caravan for its flexibility (they can be run off 12v DC, mains or LPG) then they will be an Absorption type fridge, as Compression refrigerators cannot run from gas.

One cheap 12v refrigerator good for those on a budget is the Koolatron KWC-4 Coca-Cola Personal 6-Can Mini Fridge. This highly decorative fridge can conveniently cool half a dozen cans of soda to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit below the ambient air temperature.
However, if you plan to run your 12v fridge freezer off DC all the time, rather than using LPG propane, you should definitely lean towards purchasing a compression refrigerator. This type of unit has several advantages absorption units’ lack.
Firstly, while both technologies can be setup to utilize 12v DC, a compression model will use a lot less power than a comparable absorption. This will make a huge difference when you are parked and have the 12 volt fridge freezer powered from your vehicle. An absorption fridge will draw down the car battery quite rapidly, with a well-chosen low amperage compression fridge it may be possible to leave the unit plugged in several hours with minimal impact to your battery charge state.
In fact, a compression 12v fridge can be so energy efficient is it possible to rig yourself up a setup using solar panels to keep it running indefinitely. Given the price of solar power, the fact that this is considered an option speaks volumes to the efficiency of these 12v refrigerators. Particularly noteworthy for their cooling efficiency are the 12v Danfoss compressor fridges.
A second drawback to absorption units is the issue of leveling your portable fridge. They really need to be maintained very close to level in order to work correctly. If you take your vehicle off-road you may well be deliberately seeking out ‘non-level’ terrain. 12v DC Compressor refrigeration shine under these conditions.
Fridge Or Fridge Freezer
If you want a 12v freezer, you should probably again opt for a compressor unit. Absorption 12 volt fridges can usually cool only a certain number of degrees below the ambient temperature and thus makes for a poor 12 volt freezer. With a properly equipped compressor fridge freezer temperatures are possible.
Choosing A Brand

There are several manufactures of 12v fridges suitable for use in vehicles. Norcold, Waeco and Engel are all well regarded model lines, Engel and Waeco refrigeators in particular have a very good reputation for ruggedness and durability. Engels Engel AC/DC Fridge Freezer – Engel MT45F-U1 is a very well regarded 12v fridge freezer that gets rave reviews. The firm Novakool has a line of 12v marine refrigerators intended for use on a boat.
When shopping around you will notice these 12v compressor fridge models are generally significantly more expensive than a similar 12v absorption model; and you may be tempted to purchase a cheaper 12 volt refrigerator freezer absorption model.
However, when buying a 12 volt cooler a budget model may be more trouble than it is worth.
If you are looking for a true 12v fridge intending to use it solely with a 12 Volt power supply, it is almost certainly worth the extra expense for the compressor type of 12 volt refrigerators.

Caravan Fridge

For the owner of an RV or Caravan, one of the absolute essentials for comfortable living is to have a Caravan fridge inside your touring vehicle. Without one of these handy small caravan fridges you will be left with no ability to store cold food and drinks, a very undesirable situation!
A caravan fridge is usually a 3 way fridge. This type of refrigerator is popular in all sorts of off-grid settings; including frequently being used as camping fridges. The chief defining factor that makes a 3 way fridge is its ability to run from any of three different sources of power. While a home fridge generally runs off mains power only, and a car fridge might run off 12v DC power only, the caravan fridge is more versatile. These units can not only run off mains electricity, but also can be operated from 12v DC and LPG.
When you are in a location that has mains power available, the best option for powering your appliance is to hook your caravan fridge up to a power outlet. This gets you an unlimited supply of almost free power, and saves you money on Propane.
For those of us who have caravanning adventures take us off the beaten track, odds are there will no shore power readily available. This is the situation where the LPG power option really comes in handy. LPG – Liquefied Petroleum Gas – is a form of bottled gas that can be used to power 3 way fridges. For a caravan fridge this gas will quite frequently be propane. This gas can be readily stored in a small tank on the caravans hitch, and will potentially power a small caravan fridge for a couple of weeks before needing a refill.
Please note, when you are towing your Caravan or RV, you should not leave your caravan refrigerator running off of Propane. This would potentially be very dangerous!  When you are actually on the road with your caravan, you want to utilize the 12v DC power supply. This option draws power from your car battery.
As long as your vehicle is operating the battery is constantly charged, and you can keep your refrigerator cool while driving with no hassle at all. There is one item worth nothing however. If you run your fridge from your cars battery while the vehicles engine is not on, you will quickly drain your starter and potentially find yourself unable to start your vehicle up. For this reason be very careful about when exactly you run the fridge from 12v DC!
You can clearly see the type of cooling flexibility you gain by the addition of a 3 way caravan fridge to your caravanning or RV trips.   When it comes to selecting a quality brand, Dometic caravan fridges and Electrolux caravan fridges are both well regarded. Norcold and Engel fridges are other popular brands. There is no shortage of quality products to pick from your RV or motorhome fridge freezer.
Once you have a caravan fridge installed you will save a significant amount of money. Instead of buying fresh food each day you can buy once, cook a batch, and store leftovers in the refrigerator to be eaten on subsequent days.
